Sapling and Colt was founded in 2013 by producers Tim Johanson and Mark Cartwright through their mutual passion for musical theatre.

Tim spent two years developing work and learning from Rachel Parish of Firehouse Creative Productions before founding Sapling and Colt. He believes that as musical theatre is the most popular stage genre in the UK, it is the best way of creating work for the largest, most diverse number of people. He also loves show tunes.

Fabulous director, our workshop leader and general inspiration, Lotte has been working with the company since its inception. A powerful advocate for new musical theatre, we continue to be delighted to work with her.

Work to date

To date Sapling and Colt has invited twenty artists on residencies, and have commissioned five new musicals from nine different artists. These artists include Jon Brittain, Juliet Gilkes Romero, Tim Sutton, Jonny Leigh Wright, Tim Gilvin, Pippa Cleary, Harry Blake, Jake Brunger and Stuart Slade.
